TRAUMA ~ PTS & PTSD ~ EARLY INTERVENTIONS ~ FAMILY SUPPORT
I have a special interest in Trauma and working with clients who've been the victim of Trauma or witnessed a traumatic incident which has had a major impact on them. I've undertaken additional training focused in this area. I am also qualified to practice The Rewind Technique; which is a non-invasive intervention, effective in the treatment of Trauma, PTSD and Phobias.
Trauma comes in many forms including: physical or sexual assault/abuse, violence, shooting, burglary, sudden death or suicide of someone close, rape, serious injury, a life threatening illness, traumatic childbirth, being involved in or witnessing a serious accident, war, political violence, world disasters, acts of terrorism ......
POST TRAUMATIC STRESS – PTS is a natural reaction to trauma, the symptoms of which often naturally decrease over a number of weeks, after the event. Initially the body’s responses can be frightening and significantly inhibit and limit daily lives.
A first step to recovery is understanding the physical and psychological reactions and responses which can manifest within 24 hours after the incident.
POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER – PTSD If after approximately 6 weeks following the trauma the symptoms of PTS have not decreased, have worsened or are acute from the outset, NICE guidelines advise an assessment by a GP to check for PTSD. If it is diagnosed, specific therapy may be recommended.
EARLY INTERVENTIONS - I provide early interventions for clients suffering with PTS beginning within a few days after the trauma is experienced. There isn’t instant access to this via the NHS.
Early interventions are important to help recovery. Research shows that those benefitting from good support in the early days are more likely to have a positive outcome. The sessions provide empathic support, with a safe confidential space to explore and make sense of feelings and reactions. It enables clients to gain understanding of their responses and behaviours, whilst gaining interventions to find relief. I will monitor your symptoms to check that a gradual recovery is occurring.
The guidelines for the treatment of PTS by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence); recommend these early interventions in the weeks following the trauma, emphasising its importance to promote recovery.
COUNSELLING THERAPY FOR PTSD - I will talk through with you your individual needs and the therapy I can offer for PTSD. It’s important in your recovery you feel you have choices and are in control of the support you receive, after being in a situation where you felt powerless and had no control. I believe that you are the expert on your feelings and needs. I will be guided by you and what feels right for you.
SUPPORT FOR INDIVIDUAL FAMILY MEMBERS OF OTHER PTSD SUFFERERS
The impact of a traumatic event can affect family members, disrupting everyday family life and putting considerable strain on relationships. It can be difficult coping, caring and supporting someone suffering with PTSD in the family, given their changes in behaviour and character due to the disorder.
I offer individual support to partners, carers and family members of PTSD sufferers. It provides an empathic space to find relief and support, the opportunity to explore coping strategies to manage their situation, whilst gaining understanding of their loved ones reactions and symptoms.
